Mossberg Unveils 990 SPX Magpul Semi-Auto Shotgun

Featured in:

Mossberg has announced the release of the new 990 SPX Magpul, a 12-gauge, 3-inch semi-automatic shotgun built for defensive and tactical use. Based on Mossberg’s newest semi-auto operating system, the 990 SPX Magpul combines modern ergonomics, durable construction, and accessory-ready features in a compact, purpose-driven platform.

The 990 SPX Magpul will be available with either a 14.75-inch barrel (NFA configuration) or an 18.5-inch barrel, allowing shooters to tailor the shotgun to their specific use case—from home defense to duty or training roles.

At the heart of the 990 SPX Magpul is a gas-operated system contained entirely within the forend. This design promotes smooth, consistent cycling across a broad range of ammunition. Key internal components, including the gas piston, magazine tube, hammer, and sear, receive nickel-boron and protective surface treatments to improve corrosion resistance and long-term durability.

User-focused enhancements include an enlarged, beveled loading port, a pinch-free elevator, and a high-visibility anodized orange follower. The top-mounted safety is oversized and easily accessed from either side of the shotgun, making it equally usable for right- or left-handed shooters. A clear red indicator provides immediate visual confirmation of the shotgun’s status.

The 990 SPX Magpul features Mossberg’s SPX handguard, designed to be rigid, heat-resistant, and modular. Integrated QD sling cups and M-LOK slots allow users to add weapon lights, grips, and other accessories without compromising handling. Controls are optimized for speed and ease of use, including a knurled charging handle, oversized paddle-style bolt release, and a refined tang-mounted safety.

An optic-ready receiver allows direct mounting of micro-dot optics, while a winged front fiber-optic sight supports fast target acquisition and co-witnessing with mounted optics.

Ergonomics are further enhanced with the inclusion of a Magpul SGA stock. The adjustable SGA stock provides improved recoil management, a secure shoulder interface, and multiple sling mounting options, while maintaining the shotgun’s compact and balanced feel.

The 990 SPX Magpul is offered with 14.75-inch or 18.5-inch Accu-Choke barrels, with capacities of 5+1 and 7+1, respectively, when using 2.75-inch shells. The shotgun features a matte blue metal finish and carries an MSRP of $1,309.

With the 990 SPX Magpul, Mossberg continues to expand its semi-auto shotgun lineup, delivering a modern, feature-driven platform built around reliability, modularity, and practical performance.
